Last month, Janine Schall interviewed children's book writer and illustrator Xavier Garza, who publishes his books in English and in Spanish because he thinks children should be exposed to their first language or to a language other than their own. Number two, most importantly, it is one of the few books readily available in a number of languages. The Glendale Unified School District has become one of the nation's leading laboratories for dual-language immersion, offering programs in Italian, German, Spanish, Armenian, Japanese and Korean. As all of the readers here know, children's minds are like sponges and can absorb anything that is put in front of them. Of more than 500 studies on English-language learners, Stanford University education professor Claude Goldenberg wrote that one major consistent finding was that learning to read in a child's first language boosts reading achievement in the second language. My idea for other books would be to offer comic books. One, I have never watched any of the Harry Potter movies nor read any of the books. In fact, this talented bear is multilingual, as translations are also available in Chinese, Spanish, Italian, German, Arabic, French, and Russian, all matched with the English text on the page. My husband grew up in Portugal and the dual language books help him share his culture to our kids in a fun and easy way. Do students who speak only English enjoy reading bilingual books? Reviewed by Janet J for Readers FavoriteIn "The Adventures of Bosley Bear: A Dual Language Book in Spanish and English", Bosley is an ambitious, lovable and curious bear who wants to learn more about the world outside of the tiny cave where he lives with his mother. He literally ran straight to our "reading chair" with it when the package arrived! At first, he wishes he were able to fly, to pinch, and to swim like they can, but then he realizes that there are things that only he can do, like build a sand castle. I have developed a children's dual language book that is specifically designed to help children learn and retain foreign words and strategies through techniques like repeat words, opposites, simple phrases, corresponding So far I have translations in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Arabic and Russian (and hopefully more to come). More and more publishing companies, particularly smaller, independent publishers, are publishing dual language books. Beginning students of Italian language and literature will welcome this bilingual anthology. Recently, I found out about another really neat tool that I thought LC would enjoy; a dual language book called Bosley Goes to the Beach. It's available in Spanish, Italian, Russian, German, French, Chinese, and Japanese. So when I was asked by the wonderful people at Language Bear if I would consider reviewing one of their dual language children books I jumped at the opportunity as we are all about reading and language in the Arbia household.
